Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Putting the patient at the centre of everything we do.

Facilities

Wards

The GSTC is part of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is situated on the first floor of Goole and District hospital. The GSTC is a purpose built 35 bedded unit with a further 16 patient areas on our dedicated Day Surgery Unit and a dedicated Ophthalmology Suite situated on the ground floor of the hospital.

Ward 5/6

Wards 5 and 6 is a purpose built 35 bedded inpatient unit caring for patients whose treatment requires them to stay in hospital. There are 10 single rooms, two of which are en-suite, a number of four bedded bays and a Family Room. We have a suite of clinic rooms on the unit which are used for pre-assessment and follow up clinics.

We care for patients from a wide range of surgical specialties from pre-assessment through to discharge. Our team of nurses, healthcare assistants and therapists work together, ensuring that you receive a high standard of care throughout your stay. We adopt a partnership approach that aids you to quickly recover from your operation and enables you to return home as quickly as possible.

Visiting Times on the unit are between 2.00-4.00pm and 6.30-8.00pm. We prefer only 2 people to visit you at one time and regrettably flowers are not permitted. Our visiting arrangements are in place to promote a high standard of infection prevention.

Dependent on your type of surgery, you can expect to stay in hospital between one and 5 days. This will be discussed with you at your pre-assessment appointment to allow you to make appropriate arrangements.

Day Surgery Unit (DSU)

The DSU (ward 7) is a 16 place purpose built unit dedicated to the care of patients having a day case operation, open Monday to Friday from 7.45 am – 8 pm. It includes two en-suite single rooms and a post operative recovery area/discharge lounge, furnished with comfortable recliner chairs. The unit also has its own fully equipped operating theatre where a range of procedures can be undertaken.

Patients having surgery at Goole may also attend the DSU for their pre-operative assessment were they will be seen by a nurse in one of our clinic rooms. Here you will be assessed and information will be provided which will enable you to be as fully prepared as possible for your surgery.

We have a team of dedicated Day Surgery nurses who you will meet during both clinic appointment and your hospital stay.

You can expect to have your surgery and go home on the same day. Should you require to stay overnight you would be transferred to our adjoining inpatient unit, Ward 6

Ophthalmology Unit

In 2003, we opened an Ophthalmology Unit, which includes a dedicated operating theatre and a suite of clinic rooms. The unit was purpose-built to accommodate the patient pathway that was specifically designed around meeting the needs of day case Ophthalmology patients. Treatment of cataracts and minor lid problems are undertaken as a day case under local or topical anaesthesia, which means that recovery from the operation is speedy and the risk of complications is reduced.

Our one-stop cataract service also ensures that you can have a consultation and your operation in the same day – you don’t even have to change out of your own clothes!

The majority of our outpatient clinics also take place in the Ophthalmology Unit.

Our nursing team, led by a Sister with a special interest in Ophthalmology, has been trained to support the range of activities taking place, including performing vision tests and preparing each patient for theatre. They are also involved in providing telephone advice for patients following the operation.

Theatres

At the GSTC, we have 4 Operating Theatres (including 1 in the Day Surgery Unit and 1 in the Ophthalmology Unit). Our 2 main Theatres are equipped with a laminar air flow system, which means that clean air is circulated throughout the theatre environment. Clean air systems help to reduce the risk of infections at the point of surgery.

We have a dedicated theatre team, who are experienced in all of our 7 surgical specialties. From the moment you arrive in the anaesthetic room to your period in the recovery room, the team will ensure that you are well looked after.

Radiology Department

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 0830 – 1700 (plus on call Radiographer at all other times)

Chapel

On the ground floor of the hospital, next to the restaurant, we have a small chapel that is open 24 hours a day for you to use if needed. Our hospital chaplain, who visits weekly, is available should you wish to see him regarding any spiritual or religious needs. He is happy to pray with you, administer communion or simply talk with you.

We also have a Roman Catholic priest who makes regular visits to the wards. If you would like a visit from a religious leader of another faith, this can be arranged to enable access to those who are most likely to help meet your spiritual needs.

Restaurant

Our restaurant is located on the ground floor of the hospital and is accessed via the main corridor. It is open to patients and visitors between 7.30am and 7.00pm seven days a week. In addition to serving hot meals between 12.00pm and 2.00pm and 5.00pm and 7.00pm, there are a selection of cold snacks and beverages available.

Vending machines selling drinks are also available in the Restaurant and in the foyer of the Main Reception.

WRVS

The WRVS shop is situated in the main reception area of the hospital and sells everyday items, cards, sweets, hot and cold beverages, etc. It is open from 9.15am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday but is closed during the weekend.

A regular trolley service is provided in the evening to each ward selling a variety of items.
